Transpersonal psychology is the living heartbeat of modern Western spirituality. It is the pulse which is energising New Age Christianity to leave church behind, to move forwards and become free.

It all started for Dr Stanislav Grof, a young Czechoslovak psychiatrist, when he volunteered for an academic LSD experiment in Prague.

Sandoz, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, sent a supply of LSD-25 to the psychiatric department in which he was working. Under carefully controlled scientific conditions, Grof took some of the drug. Something life-changing happened. In his own words, he "had a very profound confrontation with his own unconscious psyche."

The result of the experience was that with Abraham Maslow, he co-founded a new field of scientific research called transpersonal psychology or transpersonal science.

It is important to understand the difference between transpersonal psychology and mainstream fundamentalist psychiatry. Transpersonal psychology understands spirituality to be a healthy and evolutionary manifestation. Mainstream psychiatry argues that spirituality is an indication of psychopathology, religiosity or a lack of education.

The problem of spirituality and mystical experience has always been a challenge for the western psychiatric establishment. Grof comments: "This is an issue, which represents the core difference between traditional psychiatry and transpersonal psychology. Mainstream psychiatry is based upon the Cartesian-Newtonian materialistic world view. This maintains that the history of the universe is basically the history of developing matter. The only thing that really exists is matter and life. Consciousness and intelligence are its accidental and insignificant side-products."

"In this kind of a world view, there is no place for spirituality. To be spiritual means to be uneducated and unacquainted with modern scientific discoveries about the nature of the Universe. It means to be involved in superstition, in primitive or magical thinking. Traditional psychoanalysis explains spirituality as a regression, as a fixation on the infantile stage - a step backwards in development rather than a step forwards."

"In this context, the concept of God is interpreted as a projection of your infantile image of your father to the sky. Interest in religious ritual is seen as analogous to the obsessive-compulsive behavior of a neurotic. It is explained as a regression to the anal stage of libidinal development."

"Here lies the fundamental difference between traditional psychiatry and transpersonal psychology. The latter considers spirituality to be an intrinsic dimension of the human psyche and a critical factor in the universal scheme of things. This conclusion is not some kind of irrational belief or a speculative metaphysical assumption. It is based on systematic study of non-ordinary states of consciousness in which we can have direct experiences of the spiritual dimensions."

"These experiences fall into two distinct categories. In the first one are experiences of the Immanent Divine; they involve direct perception of the unity underlying the world of separation, and a realization that what we experience as material reality is actually a manifestation of creative cosmic energy."

"The second category includes experiences of the Transcendental Divine; here we perceive dimensions of reality that are normally hidden to our senses, such as visions of deities, or archetypal figures (as C.G.Jung would call them), and of various mythological domains."

These views of Dr Stanislav Grof appeared in print in 1996 in the book "Towards A New World View: Conversations at the Leading Edge" by Russell DiCarlo.

In astral projection (sometimes called astral travel) the conscious mind leaves the physical body and moves into the astral body.

The individual ceases to consciously experience things in the physical body and experiences them, instead, in the astral body - that is out of the physical body and in the fourth dimension. These experiences, therefore, are sometimes referred to as out-of-body experiences, or heightened states of consciousness.

During astral travel the individual is aware of things encountered on the astral plane and retains a coherent recall of those encounters in various degrees of detail and vividness/vagueness depending, to some extent, upon his personal state of spiritual evolution and training.

In astral projection the individual's astral body remains attached to his physical body by a long, thin, silver cord. Sometimes this cord, or astral umbilicus, can be seen during the out-of-body experience. It is reported that if this cord is severed permanently, the physical body dies.

Sometimes the astral body is described as one of our resurrection bodies. The mental body might be described as another.

Astral projection, out-of-body-experiences and lucid dreams complexly overlap each other in their essential characteristics. They may well represent different paradigms for conceptualising very similar, or even identical, experiences. In each case, the person is asleep, the person is conscious, and the person has the ability to compare his present heightened state of awareness with his "normal" waking state of awareness.

Understanding the nature of conscious experiences which occur during sleep, and learning how to manage and respond to them, is important for spiritual growth. Such understanding and learning is also necessary for engaging in active spiritual work during sleep.

Conscious sleep phenomena have discrete sensory, emotional and mental content which exist in direct subjective awareness while the physical body is "fast asleep" on the bed or in the chair.

It is worth repeating that the vehicle which leaves the physical body during astral projection is the astral body. The astral body is neither the soul nor the spirit.

From our point of view in physical plane waking consciousness, the human being can be thought of as having a tripartite constitution: it has three bits to its makeup. The three bits are the "incarnation module", the soul and the spirit. The incarnation module is itself made up of three components: the physical body, the astral body and the mental body.

Establishment western religiosities are in error in positing a bipartite constitution for the human being.

The physical body has seven levels of organisation within it, of which solid, liquid and gas are the three densest. The other four levels, not yet formally investigated, recognised or taught by western orthodox science, are sometimes referred to as the etheric levels.

The physical body is our vehicle of transport on the physical plane (sometimes called the third dimension); the astral body is our vehicle of transport on the astral plane (sometimes called the fourth dimension), and the mental body is our vehicle of transport on the mental plane (sometimes called the fifth dimension).

Within the incarnation module, the astral body and the mental body (together) are sometimes referred to as the personality. From our point of view in physical plane waking consciousness, it is the incarnation module which comes into being at conception or birth, and which later leaves the physical plane at "death".

The soul is quite different from the human physical, astral and mental bodies. The soul is an individuated expression of the spirit which provides animation for the incarnation module. The incarnation module is a temporary vehicle used by the soul to express itself in the world of matter.

Our spirit is our divine spark, our core star. It is the highest level of our being; it is that part of us which partakes of the divine nature; that part of us which is perfect and infinite; that part of us which has always been, is now, and will always be, one with the being of God.

Spiritual practice, among other things, seeks to align the energies of the incarnation module with those of the soul and the spirit so that the energies of light, love and abundance can be anchored on Earth.

Meditation is a spiritual exercise which seeks to align the physical brain with the soul.

A little bit of meditation here,
A little bit of faerie lore there,
A little bit of prayer breakfast here,
A little bit of tree hugging there,
A little bit of affirmation here,
A little bit of church jumble sale there,
A little bit of Harry Potter here,
A little bit of colour breathing there,
A little bit of peace vigil here,
A little bit of dolphin music there,
A little bit of crop circle walking here,

Has a new mission:
It has a walk-off part
To play.

When you're on the stage,
And the acoustic isn't working,
And there's nothing in the script
For you to say,
And there's no-one in the audience,
You walk off.

You walk off
And you hang up your costume
For the last time.

The pantomime is over.

These days
Everyone is a priest,
Or no-one is.

And there is no felt need
For stipended creeps
In fancy dress.

Although, in certain conditions,
An out-of-work actor
In priest-costume
Can be useful
At children's parties,
Trad-style weddings,
And trad-style funerals.

And chaplains of a sort
Are still required
By educational foundations
With awkward trust deeds,
Providing that the chaplains
In question
Wear jeans,
And are educated,
Broad-minded,
Syncretistically networked,
Pastorally-oriented,
Punk-looking
Wiccans or Methodists.

Popes don't like this
Type of stuff, of course.
It doesn't suit them.
Nor does Opus Dei.
It doesn't suit them, either.

But who cares
What the wrinklies think?

These days
The church
Is a thing
Of the past;
Yesterday's bad idea;
A transient historical phenomenon
Left behind
And lying lost
On the library shelves.

These days
The church
Is the forgotten fashion
Of a few;
The idle plaything
Of a diminishing chapter
Of tenured scholars
Mining antiquity
For erudite curiosities.

Which is not to say
That the church can't be
Jolly interesting sometimes,
If you like history
And you are prepared
To suspend your disbelief.

Inquisition torture masters?

And which leads to
Settling theological quibbles
By burning books
And people
To death
On slow fires?

And which leads to
Systematic mutilation
With machetes,
And suicide bombing
Of innocent civilians
In America, Afghanistan,
Israel, Iraq,
Lebanon, England
And other less fashionable
Locations within
Human civilisation?

Can this be true?
Surely not.

Surely we must be positive
And allow for the possibility
That moderate terrorists exist,
Such as Anglicans
Who subscribe to the
Thirty Nine Articles of Religion,
And Alpha which says
That my book
Is the only book,
And all other books
Are less,
And Spring Harvest which says
That the Holy Spirit
Of spiritual fascism
Is a friend of Jesus
And must be worshipped,
And Soul Survivor which says
That its heart is to envision young people
And equip them
To move in the power of this
Sectarian Holy Spirit,
Chorleywood-style,
And Al-Qaeda which says
That Jews and Americans must die
If they don't convert on demand,
Which is a moderate position to adopt
Compared with, say,
A good, old-fashioned,
Bible-led,
Holy Spirit-led,
Torture-led
Church inquisition.

And no respectable,
Moderate,
Religious terrorist organisation,
Is training
Young terrorists,
Of course.

Let's be quite clear about that.

Can any of this possibly be true?
Don't be daft.

A man with a small bruise
On his left knee
Is hopelessly enslaved
By a preconceived idea.

The preconceived idea
Which enslaves the man
Is the thought
That if he doesn't worship God
At least twice a year,
Once at Christmas
And once at Easter,
God will send him
To the funny farm
When he dies.
And what he will experience
At the funny farm
Will not be funny
And may very well
Not be funny
For quite a long time.

What this man doesn't know
Is that God
Does not want
To be worshipped.

God does not want
To be worshipped
Even by people
With perfectly healthy left knees.

Their knees
May be as perfectly unsullied
As the driven snow,
But the metaphysical principle
Stands undiminished:
God does not want
To be worshipped.

Think about it.
If you were God,
Would you want
To be worshipped
In a preconceived manner
By a man
With a small bruise
On his left knee
Who was in the grip
Of a funny farm fantasy?

No, of course you wouldn't.
If you were God,
You wouldn't be

And I don't fancy
Inhaling neon
Because neon is an inert gas
And it will not contribute positively
To my respiration ....
 
And, anyway,
Neon is used to make flashy red lights
In Las Vegas
Which waste electricity
And therefore
Contribute to the gambling
Of greenhouse gases."

You don't say that.

You would be using
The word "molecule" incorrectly
If you said that.

Only a dumbo would say that,

From the goat's point of view,

And bummist to boot.

So you don't say it.

And stop being so silly."

That's what you say.

You don't
Say it out loud
And you don't
Articulate it consciously,
But that is what
Your vital being says.

The real you inside
Simply breathes
Without judgement
Because it is that trust
In benevolence
Which sustains
The internal essence
Of your present becoming
Now.

You know this intuitively:
Breathing is more
Than an expedient exchange of gases
For physical functioning.

Breathing is prayer;
Just do it.

Do it.

But do it better and do it more.
Breathe more deeply.
And breathe more slowly.

Switch off your brain,
Cut the crap,
Flush the religious obfuscation
Down the tubes
And do it.
Breathe.

It's the spiritual economy,
Stupid.

Flutterby: No, it's not. For a lot of people on your planet, perhaps for most, prayer can be a very useful spiritual exercise.
Alcuin: What is prayer?
Flutterby: Prayer is breathing.
Alcuin: Breathing?
Flutterby: Yes. Prayer is breathing.
Alcuin: What sort of breathing?
Flutterby: Slower than usual, deeper than usual, conscious breathing.
Alcuin: What? Really stretch the ribcage? Hold the breath for as long as possible?
Flutterby: No. Not that. No useful spiritual exercise involves pain, strain, endurance or unpleasantness. Just breathe a little slower than usual and a little deeper than usual. And maybe pause the breathing process for four or five seconds between each inhalation and exhalation. And while you do that, gently pay attention to the breathing process and enjoy it.
Alcuin: Enjoy it? Enjoy prayer?

Alcuin: Prayer is boring.
Flutterby: If prayer is boring, it is not prayer at all.
Alcuin: Isn't it?
Flutterby: No. Breathing is not boring. Conscious breathing is deeply refreshing.
Alcuin: Eyes shut or eyes open?
Flutterby: You decide. Do what feels best for you. Maybe close your eyes and, while you're breathing, focus your attention on the ajna centre between the eyebrows.Picture: Third eye mandala. Ajna centre. The sixth primary chakram.


Alcuin: The third eye?
Flutterby: Yes. The interdimensional eye.
Alcuin: Right. What about posture?
Flutterby: How do you mean?
Alcuin: Kneeling? Standing up? Sitting down? What is the best posture for breathing?
Flutterby: You decide. Try out a few different postures. See what works for you. See which position helps you to breathe with the greatest comfort and freedom. Sitting up straight with an absolutely vertical spine, or lying down with an absolutely horizontal spine helps a lot of people.
Alcuin: Why?
Flutterby: Because for a lot of people the human spiritual anatomy seems to function best that way.
Alcuin: The chakras and things?
Flutterby: Yes. The interdimensional portals and energy centres in the human spiritual anatomy seem to work well in those orientations.
Alcuin: Is anything which makes you breathe especially slowly or especially deeply a form of prayer?
Flutterby: You could say that. One of the reasons why lots of sex is good for you is that it makes you breathe more and it makes you breathe deeply and it makes you breathe better. And the same thing goes for exercise and laughing and singing.
Alcuin: What should we think about when we are prayer-breathing?
Flutterby: Think about as little as possible, I would say. Just enter the process peacefully and become the breathing itself.
Alcuin: Isn't that a bit passive?
Flutterby: You could say that, yes. But prayer is not what we do to God. Prayer is what God does to us.

You always get that which you ask for if you ask for it with your Soul instead of your senses.

If you ask in words alone, you will not receive what you ask for because you have not asked God for it - you have asked your senses for it.

When, however, you have actually written your desire into your heartbeat, as some have automatically done all their lives, from moment to moment, you unfailingly acquire the knowledge you ask for.

It comes to you in a timeless flash, in the rhythmic language of Light which God uses to talk to His children.

Sympathetic help for unacceptably fat women

This blog has long supported the plight of obese persons of the female gender living in Germany and America.

Some of these women are the victims of passive fatness. On the bus to work they watch other women scoffing chocolate bars and cream cakes, they inhale too deeply, and before they know where they are they find themselves wolfing down unwanted chocolate bars and cream cakes themselves.

But other women are gratuitous, wanton, self-inflicted fatties. They have adopted a militant, fattist, anti-man lifestyle. They luxuriate in the epithet "fat slag". They meet at secret, single-sex cholesterol parties solely with the intention of achieving an adipose high.

They patronise dress shops which use curtain material and stage hangings for ball gowns. They indulge in deep Rabelaisian laughter which makes them wobble all over.

They walk around with pink wheelbarrows supporting their bellies. They emit a pungent odour of whale grease and burnt tires.

Persons of this second kind cannot be tolerated by a civilised and caring society. We urge the United Nations and the World Health Organisation to take preventive action.

We do not advocate the mass culling of female fatties as some are doing, but it is important that a fair and transparent international flab tax be levied on those of female gender whose expanded dimensions have become an eyesore to people of sensitivity and discrimination.

This blog has never ducked the issue of female size. We have always addressed the matter in a focussed and scientific manner. Some examples of our research are linked below.
