Cause and causation

One tame poodle to another:
"Who created the universe,
Woof woof?"
"God created the universe,
Woof woof."
"Who created God,
Woof woof?"
"Nobody created God.
God has always existed,
Woof woof woof."

If the universe
Needs a cause,
Why doesn’t God
Need a cause?

And if God
Doesn’t need a cause,
Why should the universe
Need a cause?

If our personal agenda requires it,
We can posit:
"God has always existed."
But another equally valid personal agenda
Might posit:
"The universe has always existed."

And anyway,
If we posit:
"God has always existed,"
There is a consequential question
To address.
"How do you know?
Who was the privileged observer
Who noticed this fact
And told you about it?"

You might answer:
"God was the privileged observer.
He told me about it."
This then raises
A couple of other
Consequential questions:
"How do you know it was God
Speaking to you,
Rather than the wino
Behind you
In the fish shop?"
And: "If God did tell you this,
Why hasn't he said
Exactly the same thing
To all those people
Who are more intelligent than you?
Does God only communicate
With the brain-dead?"

There would appear
To be a problem here.
Can anyone see what it is?

Might the whole thing
Simply be
A matter of opinion;
A matter of personal superstition?

Ontological real deal

He was thinking.
He was thinking about

Theology.

He was thinking
That if it is true
That there is nothing outside God,
Which is pretty obvious
If God is really God -
Mr Big Big Huge,
The Ontological Real Deal,
Cosmic Mind,
Sugar Daddy in the empyrean
Creator of Creators,
Ground of our Being,
Sustainer of our Becoming,
Mr Maximal Mystery
Metamanager of All That Is –
If there is nothing outside God,
Then that means
That Coca Cola
Is not outside God.

Which offers some hope
For America.

Theology must be positive:
It should posit benevolent outcomes.

And if it is true
That God's will is Evolution,
Then that might mean
That America could change
Gradually,
Over time,

And rejoin the civilised world.

The Theologians' Brains Trust

At last the great day had arrived. It was the day of the Theologians’ Brains Trust. The church hall was full. On the platform sat two rows of distinguished theologians. The chairman called the meeting to order. A reverent hush descended.

“May I have the first question for our experts, please?”
A man stood up.
“Why are this year’s crop circles more complicated than last year’s crop circles?”
The theologians were silent.

“May I have the next question for our experts, please?”
A woman stood up.
“Why, when I am meditating, are my meditations a different colour at full moon than they are at other times?”
The theologians were silent.

“May I have the next question for our experts, please?”
A child stood up.
“What is best for curing paper jams in a fax machine? Tesco shower gel or Sainsbury's thick and creamy yoghurt?”
The theologians were silent.

“May I have the next question for our experts, please?”
A priest stood up.
“What is theology?”
The theologians all started talking at once.

When the last member of the audience left the hall, the theologians were still talking. Very quietly, the caretaker switched off the lights, locked the doors and went home. He didn’t want to disturb the theologians.
